What’s better than getting dressed in a cute outfit, going out with your friends and celebrating the richness that is black culture? If you guessed nothing much, you’ve definitely got the right idea.
Saturday the 29th of October was the Black Girl Festival and if you missed it, don’t worry, this was only the first one and we’re sure there’ll be a lot more. The event which was set up by Paula Akpan and Nicole Krystal Crentsil happened in East London and brought people from all different races and genders together.
Market stalls lined the event and we got to see real examples of black girl magic with business owners opening pop-up shops for the event. This includes online jewellery store Image Gang who were selling bold and urban pieces and Meta Labs a cruelty free and homemade lipgloss line. The event was also completely because of sponsors such as the award winning Galdem magazine written by women of colour.
For those who were lucky enough to get early tickets, there were panels on topics from natural hair to women in the media featuring different black influencers such as the award winning blogger Chidera Eggerue known to her 37,000 followers as theslumflower and the owners of BBZ London and online platform that centres around eradicating misogyny.
The event was definitely a success and I’m sure everyone who went there will agree.
